Pet Supplies Fulfillment in the UAE: Heavy, Bulky, Perishable and Repeat

Oct 5
8 min read

Pet supplies combine four awkward properties that rarely appear together: individual items are heavy, like a 15kg bag of food; other items in the same range are bulky but light, like beds and carriers, which get charged on volumetric weight; food and treats carry batch numbers and expiry dates requiring FEFO picking; and the category has unusually high repeat purchase rates, which makes subscription and scheduled ordering worth building for. The result is that shipping cost, not picking cost, dominates the economics, and the way your 3PL calculates and negotiates weight is worth more to you than their pick rate.

The Category Nobody Prices Correctly First Time

Pet is a deceptively difficult range to fulfil. A single order can contain a 15kg sack of dry food, a 60cm bed, a handful of treats with an expiry date and a toy. Each of those has a different cost driver, and a 3PL quoting a flat per order rate across the range has not looked at it properly.

The brands that make pet work are the ones that understand their own weight and volume profile before they negotiate, because that is where the money is. Everything else in this article is secondary to that.

Heavy Items: Where the Margin Goes

Dry food is the backbone of most pet ranges and it is the single heaviest thing a consumer e-commerce operation routinely ships. Carriers price in weight breaks, and a 15kg bag sits well into the bands where per parcel cost rises sharply.

What that means operationally:

  • Carrier selection matters more than it does in almost any other category, because weight break pricing differs significantly between carriers

  • Free shipping thresholds need modelling against actual basket weight, not basket value. A low value heavy basket can be loss making at a threshold that works fine for the rest of the range

  • Multi bag orders may be cheaper split across two parcels than sent as one, depending on where the breaks fall. Worth testing rather than assuming

  • Manual handling limits are real. Repeatedly lifting heavy sacks is a workplace matter and some facilities cap what they will handle

Ask a prospective 3PL to price a realistic heavy order rather than an average one. A provider who quotes you a blended per parcel rate without asking about weight distribution is going to come back and reprice.

Bulky Items: The Volumetric Weight Trap

Carriers charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, which is calculated from the parcel's dimensions. A large dog bed weighs very little and occupies a great deal of space, so it is charged as if it were much heavier.

Three things reduce the damage:

  • Compressed or vacuum packed inbound, where the product allows it, so the shipping carton is as small as the product permits

  • Right sized packaging rather than a standard box range, since void space is charged as if it were product

  • Carrier selection again, because volumetric divisors differ between carriers and the difference on a bulky range is substantial

Storage is affected too. Bulky stock consumes cubic space rather than pallet positions, so if your warehousing is priced per pallet position you may be paying for air. For a bulky heavy range, cubic metre pricing often reflects reality better. Ask for both and compare against your actual stock profile.

Food and Treats: Batch, Expiry and FEFO

Pet food and treats carry batch numbers and expiry dates, which puts them in the same operational class as human food and supplements rather than general merchandise.

FEFO rather than FIFO

FIFO ships the oldest received stock. FEFO ships the stock closest to expiry. They diverge whenever you receive a long dated batch after a short dated one, and on a dated range that divergence shows up as write offs. Confirm that your provider picks by FEFO rather than FIFO, and that batch and expiry are captured at goods in rather than assumed from the delivery date.

Traceability

If a supplier flags a quality issue with a specific batch, you need to know which orders contained it. A warehouse that records batch at pick can give you that list in minutes. A warehouse that does not can only tell you everyone who bought the product, which turns a contained issue into a general one.

Minimum remaining shelf life

Decide what minimum remaining life you are willing to ship to a customer, tell the warehouse, and have stock below that threshold flagged rather than picked. Without a rule, short dated stock gets shipped, and a customer who receives food expiring in three weeks complains in a way that is entirely reasonable.

Compliance for Pet Food and Animal Products in the UAE

Pet food, treats and animal health products are regulated in the UAE and the requirements differ from general merchandise. Registration and import approval obligations typically apply, and they vary by product type, with veterinary and medicated products subject to tighter control than toys or accessories.

What this means practically for fulfillment:

  • Stock can be held at customs if import documentation does not match the product or the approvals are not in place

  • Labelling requirements may mean relabelling work at the warehouse before stock is sellable, which needs quoting and scheduling rather than discovering on arrival

  • A 3PL cannot make unapproved stock sellable, so the registration work has to be done before the container is booked, not after it lands

This is an outline rather than advice. Requirements change and vary by product category. Confirm your specific position with the relevant authority or a regulatory consultant before importing, because the cost of getting it wrong is a container sitting at the border.

Repeat Purchase and Subscriptions

Pet is one of the highest repeat purchase categories in e-commerce, for the obvious reason that the animal keeps eating. That makes subscription and scheduled reordering unusually valuable here, and it changes what you need from fulfillment.

What a subscription model actually demands of a warehouse:

  • Predictable recurring volume, which is a planning advantage rather than a problem, provided the warehouse is told the schedule

  • Stock commitment, since a subscriber expecting delivery on the 1st is a promise rather than an order you might fulfil

  • Batch dating discipline, because a subscriber receives the same product repeatedly and will notice if one month's bag is nearly expired

  • Clean handling of skipped, paused and amended orders, which is where most subscription fulfillment goes wrong

  • Consistent packing, since repeat customers notice variation in a way one time buyers do not

The operational point worth making to any 3PL: subscription volume is forecastable. Share the forecast. A warehouse that knows 2,000 subscription orders release on the 1st of the month can resource for it, and that is a far better conversation than discovering it.

Returns in Pet

Return rates are lower in pet than in fashion or electronics, but the returns that do happen have a hygiene dimension similar to beauty.

  • Opened food cannot go back to sellable stock, regardless of condition

  • Sealed food can, if remaining shelf life is adequate. Set a threshold rather than deciding case by case

  • Used bedding, toys and accessories are generally not resellable once they have been with an animal

  • Damaged in transit should be tracked separately from customer returns, because on a heavy range transit damage usually means a packaging problem rather than a customer problem

  • That last point matters more here than elsewhere. A burst food bag is a packaging and handling failure, and if it is happening repeatedly it is cheaper to fix the pack specification than to keep refunding.

Cross Border Into the GCC

Pet food and animal products are among the more tightly controlled categories for cross border movement within the GCC, and requirements differ by destination country. Treat a Saudi or Omani shipment as a separate compliance question rather than assuming UAE approval carries across.

The practical consequence for a growing brand is that domestic fulfillment in a second market often becomes worthwhile earlier in pet than in other categories, because the per shipment compliance overhead on heavy cross border goods is high relative to the order value.

How We Handle This

Pet Supplies is one of the industries Eshopify Fulfillment serves, out of the Al Quoz facility in Dubai. For this category specifically, the things worth asking us about are the ones this article raises: how we handle heavy item carrier selection, whether storage is priced in a way that suits a bulky range, and how batch and expiry are captured and picked.

Stock is tracked to location in an enterprise warehouse management platform, which is what makes batch level capture, FEFO picking and recurring subscription volume manageable rather than manual. Cash on delivery is standard, and bundling and kitting are standard services, which covers the multipack and starter bundle formats pet brands tend to run. Our published operating accuracy is 98% inbound, 98% outbound and 99% inventory accuracy.

If you are moving a pet range to a new provider, send the SKU list with weights and dimensions rather than just the product names. For this category that single file tells us more about what it will cost than any other information you can give us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes pet supplies difficult to fulfil?

Four properties that rarely appear together in one range: heavy individual items like 15kg food bags, bulky but light items like beds that are charged on volumetric weight, food and treats carrying batch numbers and expiry dates that require FEFO picking, and unusually high repeat purchase rates that make subscription handling worth building for. Shipping cost rather than picking cost dominates the economics.

What is volumetric weight and why does it matter for pet products?

Carriers charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, which is calculated from the parcel's dimensions. A large dog bed weighs very little but occupies a lot of space, so it is billed as though it were much heavier. Right sized packaging, compressed inbound where the product allows it, and comparing carriers' volumetric divisors all reduce the cost materially.

How should pet food be picked in a warehouse?

By FEFO, first expired first out, rather than FIFO. The two diverge whenever a long dated batch is received after a short dated one, and on a dated range that divergence becomes write offs. Batch and expiry should be captured at goods in rather than inferred from the delivery date, so you can also identify which orders contained a specific batch if a quality issue arises.

Does pet food need registration to sell in the UAE?

Pet food, treats and animal health products are regulated and registration or import approval obligations typically apply, varying by product type, with veterinary and medicated products controlled more tightly than toys or accessories. A 3PL cannot make unapproved stock sellable, so this work has to be completed before the container is booked. Confirm your specific position with the relevant authority before importing.

How do free shipping thresholds work for heavy products?

They need modelling against basket weight rather than basket value. A threshold that works across a general range can be loss making on a low value heavy basket, because carriers price in weight breaks and a food bag sits well into the expensive bands. Model your actual order profile against your carrier's weight breaks before setting the threshold.

What does a subscription model require from a 3PL?

Stock committed against the schedule rather than treated as ordinary orders, batch dating discipline so a repeat customer never receives a near expired bag, clean handling of skipped and amended orders, and consistent packing since repeat buyers notice variation. The advantage is that subscription volume is forecastable, so share the forecast and the warehouse can resource for the release date.

Can returned pet products be resold?

Opened food cannot go back to sellable stock regardless of condition, and used bedding, toys and accessories generally cannot either once they have been with an animal. Sealed food can be restocked if adequate shelf life remains, against a threshold set in advance. Track transit damage separately from customer returns, because on a heavy range repeated damage usually points to a packaging specification problem.
